One of the tactics that media monitors use is to count the number of media mentions in any given period. So, for example, if you are a politician called "Needyah Vote", you could employ a company, such as media monitors, to let you know how many times and why you were mentioned in or on newspapers, TV, radio etc. in the previous week. Now, of course, not all of us are politicians or celebrities but 'media monitoring' can be very useful, especially online. For example, to measure how my overall Google marketing efforts are going, I just type in "allen jesson" into Google. I am pleased to report that as of today, this is the result:

Results 1 - 10 of about 24,400 for "allen jesson".

So, 24,400 pages indexed in Google, that carry my name (yes, there is only one Allen Jesson).

It is also a useful tactic to see how your blog launches are going. For example, I announced I was launching a new blog for my tell a friend application in my blog launch formula. I am very pleased to report, that after only a couple of weeks online, these are the Google results:

Results 1 - 10 of about 909 for "tellafriendzy".

Wow!! Nearly 1,000 pages indexed within Google within a couple of weeks. I am very pleased with that.

One word of caution when you use 'media monitoring' (by keying "yournameorwebsite" into Google). Obviously "allen jesson" and "tellafriendzy" are unique names. If you have a website name that is not unique or just happen to be called John Smith then it might be an idea to start thinking of a unique brand that you can build over time. Of course, once you have thought of a few ideas, you can just type "youridea" into Google and see if anybody has had a similar idea. If you get zero results, you can pretty sure that it's ok to proceed (and then of course, you can check your brand building strategy using the method outlined above).
