Social Bookmarking
How many times have you found a website and wanted to save it somewhere so that you can go back to it at a later date? The most common way to save a record of a website is to add it to your favourites in your web browser. However this method is very messy and it will not be long before you are trawling through a long list trying to find the website you want.
Not only is this method extremely old, it only allows you to view the information from the computer that it was saved on, how is that going to be of any help when you're at work or away from home?
The answer is social bookmarking.
Social Bookmarking uses a website instead of a browser. The first thing you will need to do is sign up for an account, there are many social bookmarking sites to choose from such as del.icio.us, Simpy and Furl. When you are signing up you will be able to add a button called 'tag' to your browser, this is very important. Whenever you visit a website and want to save it all you need to do is click 'tag' and the website will be saved on your social bookmarking site.
When you save a website you can also include additional information such as notes, description and tags. Tags are basically key words which will help you find the bookmarks later. When you have added your 'tags' you will then save the page to the social bookmarking site.
Saving all your favorite sites in one list will soon become confusing, so adding tags will filter the sites into their relevant places making them much easier to find later on.
Let's say you had over 100 sites saved and you wanted to find only sites with information about pet care, you would click the tag names pet care and you will be presented with all the sites that were tagged with the words ' pet care' making all your sites a lot more findable.
Social bookmarking is called social bookmarking for a reason, bookmarks are public so others can benefit from what you have listed. Think about it like this, imagine a student bookmarking information about history, other students can see the intersesting sites you find, then they also start bookmarking sites they have found within a short period of time a group of students are all bookmarking and sharing new and relevant information.
Social bookmarking is a really simple and effective way to organise all the information and sites you may want to return to and a way of sharing this information with others.
